Proper Care of a Wrought Iron Fence
One of the most beautiful types of fencing that can be used in many different settings is wrought iron. This type of fencing is often used as a short barrier surrounding front yards or as a tall manual or automatic driveway gate. This fencing can be built to suit specific needs for all home or business owners and provides a beautiful look for all applications. However it does take special care in order to keep it looking great! Here are a few tips to keep your iron fence looking beautiful.
In order to protect the finish on your iron fence be sure to trim plants away from the fence, especially those that may easily cause scratches, such as thorny roses or blackberry bushes. A scratch in the finish may cause rust. At least once a year be sure to walk the length of your fence and inspect for missing post caps that may need replacing or any other damage that may allow for rust to appear. A missing cap could allow for rainwater to collect inside an individual pole, causing the fence to rust from the inside out, so be sure to quickly replace any that are found to have gone missing.
To keep moss, dirt and other contaminants from taking over your fence you should conduct an annual scrubbing using warm water mixed with dishwashing liquid. Use a soft sponge or rag to wash the fence’s surface and then a cotton towel to dry. After the fence is completely dry it is a good idea to apply a wax, such as car wax, to protect the paint and finish of the fence. When cleaning hinges and latches ensure that there is no water being trapped in them!
To prevent the spreading of rust be sure to repair any scratches as soon as they are noticed. To do so sand the area around the damage down to bare metal and then use a small paint brush or sponge to reapply the same finish that was used on the rest of the fence. It will dry to match!
Like scratches, flaking paint should also be repaired quickly. Use a wire brush to scrub the area free of any loose paint chips and debris then sand the area down to the metal. If necessary use a filler material to smooth the surface and then clean the area with soap and water. Apply rust proofing primer and paint for best results and a long lasting finish.
With proper care a wrought iron fence will maintain its original beauty for years and years!
