Five Tips for Wood Fence Care and Maintenance
For added privacy, security or curb appeal, an attractive wood fence installed by a quality fencing company can be a great addition to your home or property. But Mother Nature has a way of taking her toll, especially in the moist climate of eastern Washington. Without proper care and maintenance, that fence will begin to deteriorate and lose its charm within a few years, and may soon need to be replaced.
The good news is that by taking a few steps to protect and maintain your wood fence, it can serve you well for many years to come. Here are five maintenance tips to keep in mind:
1. Use protective paint, stain or sealant
Painting or staining your fence will not only add color and texture, but it also provides a protective coat that seals it from the elements. You'll want to apply this protective layer a couple of times during the first year, then reapply every few years to keep it protected.
2. Use cedar or redwood for a “weathered” look
If you're actually going for the distressed or “weathered” look, a good alternative is to use cedar or redwood for your fencing material. These woods are naturally resistant to rot, and applying a sealant will only add further protection.
3. Point sprinklers away from the fence
When watering your lawn or shrubs, try to keep the water from hitting the fence. This might seem like a silly thing to say because your fence is obviously going to get rained on all the time, but most municipal water supplies are treated with chlorine and other chemicals that aren't found in rainwater. These chemicals, not the water itself, is what you don't want hitting the fence. Aim sprinklers away from the fence, and you'll extend its life span.
4. Treat for mildew or fungus
Mildew and fungi love to grow on wood fences, especially after heavy rains or moisture. Keep an eye out for this growth, and if you see it, remove it. Your local hardware or home improvement store will have anti-fungal products available.
5. Keep soil and plants away from the wood
“How could plants or dirt harm my fence?” you may ask. The answer is, they can't—but insects can. When topsoil, grass blades or shrubbery come in contact with your wood fence, they create a path for wood-boring insects like termites to find your fence and destroy it. One reason why the fence posts are set in concrete is to keep the wood posts away from the soil. Brush away topsoil from the posts, keep your grass trimmed, and keep shrub and tree branches from touching the fence.
