Considerations for New Fence Installation
If you're planning a new fence installation for your home or business, there are a number of things to consider when selecting a particular type of fence. For example, some ornamental fences like wrought iron are more costly, and may not be cost-effective when enclosing larger spaces. Likewise, there are times when a chain link fence would serve the same purpose as a wood fence, but would cost less money. Taking the following considerations into account will help you narrow down your options before you bring the fencing company out to begin installation.
Purpose of the fence
The first thing to consider with a new fence installation is why you're installing the fence in the first place. Is it for added security, privacy, or curb appeal? If you're installing a privacy fence around a backyard, for example, you'll likely want to consider wood or vinyl fencing. If you're looking for something more decorative, like a picket fence or ornamental fencing, there are some great designs available in wood, vinyl, wrought iron or an iron equivalent. If security is your main concern, again, you have some options. For basic security to enclose your property, chain link works as well as any other fence type; wrought iron fencing is more expensive, but it offers the highest security and durability.
Amount of space you're enclosing
Obviously, the more fencing you need to install around a space, the more the cost comes into play. As beautiful as wrought iron fencing is, most people don't have the budget to have it installed around a large amount of acreage. You can choose any fence type you want, of course, but as a basic rule of thumb, people tend to gravitate to the following fence types based on the amount of space:
- Large acreage (e.g., farmland, large commercial property): chain link fencing
- Medium-area spaces: chain link or wood fencing
- Smaller enclosures (e.g., a yard or pen): all fence types
The amount of money you have to spend obviously plays a huge role in the type of fencing you will select. You'll get the most "bang for your buck" with basic chain link fencing, while wood fencing is suitable for most modest budgets. Vinyl fencing is the next tier up, followed by iron. And of course, there are varying price points within each of these options.
If you're looking for a fence type that requires relatively little maintenance, you don't get much lower-maintenance than vinyl fencing. Chain link fences also are fairly durable and
low-maintenance. Wood fences require the most attention because they are susceptible to weathering, rot, wood-boring insects, so they have to be treated regularly.
